How to mix wheatpaste
FLOUR, WATER, SALT
If you can make pancake batter, you can make wheatpaste. After all, this is the same stuff children use to make science-fair volcanoes. Here’s how to do it.
You will need flour, water (approximately 1 part flour to 4 parts water), salt for preservative, a pot for boiling, a mixing bowl, a whisk or spoon, and a container to store your wheatpaste.
First, boil all the the water you expect to use in a large pot. Once boiling, turn off the heat.
Sift your flower into the mixing bowl or pour it and beat it with the whisk to remove lumps.
Scoop or pour about one cup of the boiling water into the mixing bowl with the flour.
Whisk the flour and water together until mixed into a thick paste. Add more water as needed to keep it liquid enough for mixing.
Keep adding water until your mix is the preferred consistency. We like it to be brushable but not runny, similar to acrylic paint.
Let the mixture cool in the bowl for 15 minutes. Re-check the consistency and add water if it has thickened.
Pour or ladle your wheatpaste into jars, tubs, or bottles for storage.
Use or refrigerate within a week or so. The salt will help keep the glue from spoiling a bit longer, but it will go bad in a few weeks. That’s ok, just make more!
